Cadillac will show off the fastest, most powerful car it has offered in its 112-year history, the 2016 CTS-V, at next month’s Detroit show.

The 640hp model, which also develops 630 lb ft of torque, can top 200mph (300km/h) and goes on sale next summer. It’s the third generation of the luxury sports sedan that launched the elite V-Series a decade ago.

It also introduces a new supercharged 6.2-litre V8 engine backed by a paddle shift, eight speed, automatic transmission with launch control and 'performance algorithm shifting'.

With more horsepower and torque than the Mercedes-Benz 5.5-litre biturbo V8 and the BMW M-series 4.4-litre TwinPower (twin-turbo) V8, the new CTS-V is claimed to be capable of 0-60mph performance in 3.7 seconds.
