GERMANY: Mercedes September sales grow 15.9%

By Chris Wright | 4 October 2013

There may be a global economic downturn but no one has told Daimler's Mercedes Benz which has reported all time record sales worldwide for September.

Last month the brand sold more vehicles than in any other month in its history with a total of 142,994 new cars sold worldwide, equivalent to growth of 15.9%.

Since the beginning of 2013, Mercedes has sold 1,062,638 units, up 10%, and saw growth of 18% in the third quarter alone.

The US and China were particularly strong in the third quarter although Mercedes also expanded its market shares in Europe where it remains the top premium brand in Germany, and also grew in Japan.

The company said the strong sales had been fuelled by the success of its compact models and the launch of the updated E-class while the redesigned S-Class is already selling strongly in Germany and is currently being launched in China.

Sales and marketing head Joachim Schmidt said: "Looking at the previous nine months, we can safely say that Mercedes-Benz will post another sales record for 2013."

Mercedes delivered 71,085 vehicles in Europe during September, up 14.2% despite tough market conditions with strong growth in the UK (+28%), Turkey (+31.5%) and Russia (+20.1%). In its home market the brand had a market share of over 9% and has now been the market leader in the premium segment in every month this year.

In China and Hong Kong, Mercedes delivered 56,992 vehicles - one in six of its are sold in the region.

In the US, the brand set another sales record during September delivering 24,697 vehicles, up 6.7%. Latin America has been a particularly successful region with sales up 47.5% since the beginning of the year.

In Brazil, Daimler will start assembly at its new plant in Iracemápolis near São Paulo from 2016, building the next generation C-Class and GLA for local sale.

Athough Smart have fallen this year from 78,984 to 73,782, the company said the compact two seater is enjoying growing popularity in China where 1,640 Fortwos were sold in September alone (+22.5%).
