GERMANY: Daimler eyes lighter materials

By Graeme Roberts | 17 August 2011

Daimler will invest several hundred million euros in the use of lighter materials such as carbon fibre in the development and production of motor vehicles, research and development executive Thomas Weber said in an interview with Reuters.

However, carbon materials cost between EUR50 and EUR100 per kilogramme, which is ten times more than steel, Weber said.

Daimler's goal is carbon price of EUR20/kg and then the material will be used in mass production. Weber expects this to happen in 2015, Financial Times Deutschland said.
