Warning strikes by IG Metall members started at midnight Tuesday night.

IG Metall is seeking a 5% pay rise for its members. Employers are offering 1.4%.

3,000 workers protested outside Ford's Saarlouis plant, and 1,500 DaimlerChrysler workers downed tools briefly in Rastatt and Duesselsdorf, reported Reuters.

According to AP Online, workers at BMW Leipzig also staged a short strike.

In Bavaria 1,400 workers walked out briefly at 14 companies including component makers Osram and Epcos and electronic chip manufacturer, Infineon.

More warning strikes were expected on Wednesday, according to Reuters.
