Volkswagen is seeking a joint venture partner in India to make light commercial vehicles.

According to the India Times, Volkswagen is in talks with several potential partners as part of its strategy to expand across Asia.

Volkswagen is already building a passenger car plant in India, due to come on stream in 2009. It will have capacity to produce 110,000 vehicles a year.

The company already imports Crafter and Caravelle light trucks into India.

Volkswagen member Harald Schomburg is reported as saying at the Hannover motor show that in addition to producing a new small car based on the Polo in India from 2010, Volkswagen is also looking to produce a new commercial vehicle. He said that at the moment Volkswagen does not have a product that meets Indian needs.
