Volkswagen AG has named Hans-Joachim Rothenpieler as head of vehicle development at its Rolls-Royce & Bentley Motor Cars unit, the company said.

Rothenpieler has been head of vehicle development at Skoda, the VW unit based in the Czech Republic. He takes over from Ulrich Hackenberg, who will concentrate on his other duties as head of production development and concepts at VW's Wolfsburg, Germany, headquarters.

Presently, Rolls-Royce and Bentley cars are built at a Volkswagen-owned plant at Crewe, in the UK. In 2003, Bayerische Motoren Werke AG will take over the Rolls-Royce brand and shift production to a new plant it plans to build at Goodwood, southern England. VW will continue to produce Bentleys at Crewe.
