The Israeli car market registered a slight drop in new vehicle deliveries in the 1st half of 2001. During that period 82,137 new private cars and light commercial vehicles were delivered compared to 82,643 last year, a decline of just 0.61%.

However, the sales trend worsened in the second quarter after a strong first quarter when deliveries were up by over 10%. The decline is put down to deteriorating economic prospects and a loss of confidence caused by the regional crisis involving Israel.

The slowdown in the second quarter was especially strong in the fleet car sector. Sales of the Ford Focus, an important model in that segment, fell back to just 1,600 units in the second quarter, having managed some 2,500 units in the 1st quarter.

Despite the decline Delek Motors, the importer of Ford and Mazda, held on as leading importer with 13,438 vehicles (16.42% share) delivered in the first six months of 2001. Second place among the importers went to Champion Motors (VW group excluding Skoda) with 11,462 units (13.95% share). In third is the Carasso group, the importer of Renault and Nissan (long before the strategic alliance between the two car manufacturers was established) with 10,143 vehicles (12.35% share).
