Toyota reportedly plans to resume a weekend production schedule in September, following one it implemented in July, to meet strong demand for the Prius.

Kyodo reported that Toyota will have employees work during their days off on two Saturdays in September at its plant in Toyota, Aichi Prefecture

Demand for the Prius has increased due to recent government tax breaks and subsidies for fuel-efficient cars and it was the best-selling car in Japan last month.

Kyodo noted that Toyota resumed weekend production for the first time since last December to meet growing demand for the popular gasoline-electric Prius hybrid car. Weekend production had been suspended as part of efforts to adjust output amid the global economic downturn, Kyodo said.
