SIV-2 concept offers a preview of next Korando

A plug-in version of C300, the next SsangYong Korando, is under development, just-auto.com has learned. The new EV will be sold worldwide and is on schedule for release in 2019.

The next generation of the brand's C segment SUV is expected to enter production in the second half of 2019. Styling wise, it should look like the SIV-2, a concept which was first seen at the 2016 Geneva motor show.

As the recently launched D/E segment Rexton demonstrates, SsangYong's SUVs are increasingly gaining a family look and retaining much of the design features of the firm's concepts.

SsangYong's owner Mahindra & Mahindra is developing electric versions of some of its models too, with a plug-in KUV100 said to be due for release in the Indian market within the next 12 months.

Another model for SsangYong's Pyongtaek plant will be easily accommodated. The firm's only vehicle factory has three production lines but has for years been running at way less than its capacity. The success of the Tivoli has been a boon for both Pyongtaek and SsangYong's engine plant.

The Korean brand continues to do well in its home market, where in September it took third place, overtaking GM Korea's Chevrolet and Daewoo brands thanks to 9,465 registrations versus 8,991. In fifth place came Renault Samsung, with 7,362, ahead of Genesis (1,437).
