Production was stopped at Ford's assembly plant in Genk, Belgium, and 2,000 workers were sent home after the roof was damaged by heavy rain.

According to Automobilwoche, around 50 cars and numerous pieces of machinery were damaged when the roof fell in. None of the 50 people working in that part of the plant were hurt, despite a hole in the roof estimated at 250 square metres.

Production resumed on Saturday in areas of the plant not affected by the damage.

Ford produces the S-Max, Galaxy and Mondeo at Genk at a rate of almost 1,200 units a day. The company has invested EUR715m in the plant to introduce new flexible production systems. As many as five different body styles can be produced in any order. These body styles are the S-Max, Galaxy, Mondeo four-door, Mondeo five-door and Mondeo wagon (estate).

Genk is the only Ford plant to produce all these models.
