French automaker Renault is aiming to become the first car manufacturer to switch from 14- to 42- volt electrical systems within its vehicles, according to Automotive News Europe (17/7/00).

The move will see the company introduce a model with a combination of the 14- and 42- volt power, in 2004. Full 42-volt application is expected in 2007 says Renault, when all components required for the system will have become more cost-effective.

Renault has already been developing the 42-volt electrical system since 1998, using its Scenic model as a prototype.
