Spanish vehicle output fell 39% year on year in November, trade group ANFAC said on Thursday, noting this was the fourth consecutive month of falling production.

During the first 11 months of the year output fell 10.2% to 2.46mvehicles.

"The sharp decline during the month of November is explained by the slowdown in the European market, which has posted seven consecutive months of lower sales, and by the poor state of the Spanish market," a statement said.

Output was off 25.9% year on year last month and ANFAC has predicted local car production will fall to 1997 levels.

The majority of auto makers with operations in Spain have temporarily laid off workers due to the declime in demand, Agence France-Presse noted.
