Sales by Nissan Motor's Chinese joint venture fell 20% year on year to about 93,700 vehicles in China in September.

That followed a 0.7% decrease in August and a 12.3% drop in July, Reuters reported.

The company said the decline in September was due to sluggish sales of light commercial vehicles and increased competition in the passenger car segment.

Sales in the first nine months of the year rose 5.2% to about 879,100 vehicles.

Nissan's target is 1.4m cars in China this year, up 10.6%.
