Passenger car registrations rose 5.4% to 8,835 vehicles last month, the strongest September result since 1987. Toyota again was passenger leader with 17% market share followed by Holden (12%) and Mazda (10%). Year to date, Toyota, Holden and Mazda were passenger vehicle market leaders. The Toyota Corolla was the top selling passenger model for September followed by the Holden Commodore and Mazda 3.

New commercial vehicle registrations rose 5.2% to 3,639 units. The Ford Ranger was top seller followed by the Toyota Hilux and Holden Colorado.

Sports utility vehicles remained the dominant vehicle segment with 33% market share last month and year to date.

"If registrations of new vehicles continue at the pace for the first nine months of the year, the industry will easily break the 130,000 unit barrier in 2015 for the first time ever" said David Crawford, chief executive officer of the Motor Industry Association. "The new vehicle market continues to flout general economic indicators."
