Mitsubishi Motors has doubled production capacity for the Outlander PHEV at its Okazaki plant near Nagoya to 4,000 units/month (or nearly 50,000 units/year).

First retailed in Japan on 24 January, the model has accumulated about 8,000 orders to date in the domestic market versus an original target of 4,000 units for the same period.

MMC will also begin a programme to increase manufacturing efficiency to decrease overall production cost and create more flexibility to meet changes in volume and models.

In turn, this will create room to increase Outlander PHEV volume further, amongst other cars also built at the Okazaki plant

In Europe - forecasted to be the PHEV’s largest market – the car has already racked up over 10,000 orders since December 2012.

MMC will launch the PHEV sequentially in Europe, starting with the Netherlands and Nordic countries from October.

Other European markets will gradually follow from November 2013 to Q1 2014.

Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid EV

Start of production for Europe

As previously announced, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) has started production of its pioneering Plug-in Hybrid EV (or “PHEV”) for Europe.

Twice the forecast

Built at MMC’s Okazaki plant near Nagoya, Outlander PHEV has proved a smashing success in the marketplace, far surpassing Mitsubishi Motors most optimistic forecasts.

First retailed in Japan since January 24th, 2013, it has accumulated about 8,000 orders to date with Japanese customers, to be compared with an original target of 4,000 units for the same period.

Increased efficiency

Therefore, in order to meet increasing orders from customers in Japan and overseas, MMC has decided to double the production capacity for this car at the Okazaki plant to 4,000 units/month (or nearly 50,000 units/year), effective now.

Furthermore, at the start of next year MMC will also begin a work program meant to increase manufacturing efficiency to decrease overall production cost and create more flexibility to meet changes in volume and models.

In turn, this will create room to increase Outlander PHEV volume further, amongst other cars also built at the Okazaki plant

Europe – PHEV’s market

In Europe - forecasted to be Outlander PHEV’s largest global market – the car has already racked up over 10,000 signed orders in total since December 2012.

Therefore, managing a fine balance between production capacity and overall demand, MMC will launch Outlander PHEV sequentially in Europe, starting with selected PHEV markets (The Netherlands, Nordic countries, etc,…) from October 2013 onwards.

The other European markets will gradually follow from November 2013 to Q1 2014.
