A-class cockpit borrows ideas and parts from larger Merc models

Daimler's Mercedes-Benz has revealed a stunning cockpit design for its upcoming redesigned A-Class.

It promised its new "compact car generation would replace a bestseller that has decisively contributed to a more youthful brand image" because the average age of European owners is now 13 years lower than for the previous model.

"The new A-Class embodies the next stage in our design philosophy of sensual purity, and has the potential to usher in a new design era," claimed design chief Gorden Wagener.

"The interior presents modern luxury at a level previously unattainable in this class, and transports the user interface into the digital age."

The interior architecture and the control and display systems are said to be unique in this segment. The dashboard is divided into two three dimensional, horizontal sections with the lower part separated visually from the main body of the dashboard by a 'trench' and appearing to float in front of the dashboard. Optional LED ambience lighting - with 64 colours instead of 16 previously - enhances this effect, accentuating the free-floating impression of the substructure.

The standard widescreen cockpit is completely free standing there are no cowls above the instruments. Sporty 'turbine' air vents, inspired by aircraft jet engines, with insides lit by the ambience lighting, are another highlight.

The multifunctional steering wheel is shared with the S-Class and front seats have comfort features from higher segments, including climate control, massage function and multi contour adjustment. Trim elements wrap around" design and materials such as open pore wood are intended to impart an impression of high quality.

The interior will have better all round visibility and more space. Shoulder room (front +9 mm, rear +22 mm), elbow-room (front +35 mm, rear +36 mm) and headroom (front +7 mm, rear +8 mm) are all increased. Access to the rear seats is easier. The boot is 29 litres bigger at 370 litres and two section rear lights allowed the loading aperture to be 20cm with luggage compartment floor 11.5cm longer.
