Sales by Mazda Motor Europe in August were up 20% compared to the same month last year, in a market that grew by 2.2%. It was the brand's best August in six years, and its 24th consecutive month of double-digit sales growth.

Three markets set all-time August sales records, including Italy, up 102%, Spain, up 41% and Portugal, up 14%.

Sales in Greece were up 148%, the best August performance in 12 years. Other markets achieving double-digit growth included the UK, up 60%, Norway, up 59% and Denmark, up 41% over last August. In France sales were up 33%, in the Czech Republic & Slovakia 28%, in Belgium 25%, in Switzerland 21%, and in The Netherlands 20%.

Austria sales were up 7%, while Russian volume rose over 5%.

German sales rose 4% over last year and total volume accounted for 31% of Mazda's total European sales for the month. Germany has long been a strong market for the brand and sales there for the period January to August were 8% higher than in same period in 2003.

For the first eight months of this year, Mazda's Europe sales were up 27% over the same period last year. Total volume was at 187,559 units, which is almost 5,500 vehicles more than in all of 2002.
