Light vehicle sales in Turkey declined by 34.2% year-on-year in January, according to figures released by the Automotive Distributors’ Association (ODD).

ODD figures show that 29,545 passenger cars and light commercial vehicles were sold in Turkey in January compared to sales of 44,892 units last year. Car sales were down 29.4% to 21,077 in January.

The top brand for sales in January was Renault with 4,710 vehicles units, followed by Volkswagen at 3,848 units and Ford with 3,671 units.

Local analysts point to a slowdown in the Turkish economy, higher interest rates and exceptionally cold weather as factors behind the weak January sales.

The Turkish vehicle market was up 15% to 911,000 units in 2011, but the second half saw a significant slowdown.
