Not withstanding recent sanctions announcements by supplier PSA Peugeot Citroen, Iranian automaker IKCO said it would introduce XUM engines in place of XU7 engines in its Samand and Peugeot 405 sedans to make them complaint with Euro IV emissions rules.

Javad Soleimani, IKCO vice-president of quality and product development, said:"Currently XU7 is fitted in Samand and Peugeot 405 sedans, however IKCO aims to improve its cars' emissions standard to Euro IV by designing and developing XUM engines."

The XUM engines will be offered on some Samand and Peugeot 405 models, others others will have TU5 and EF7 engines.

The XUM is a 1,900cc engine that is available in petrol and bi-fuel versions and meets Euro IV. Despite its boosted capacity, the optimised engine has the same consumption as the XU7 engine - close to 8.7 litres/100km.

Performance and durability tests have been recently completed for the engine. It will be mass-produced by late June 2012.
