Hyundai Motor plans to open its car plant in St Petersburg on 21 September with mass production slated to start in January.

The plant is expected reach annual production capacity of 100,000 vehicles by the end of 2011, and plans to increase the output to 150,000 units in the future.

The plant will achieve a high level of 'localization' in accordance with the Russian government’s requirements, thanks to the proximity of South Korean automotive part suppliers and cooperation with a number of international and Russian companies, Hyundai Motor CIS said. Steel supplier Hyundai Hysco and components supplier Hyundai Mobis are both located on site while seven other component suppliers are in an industrial park 2km away.

Hyundai started building the EUR500m plant in June 2008. In May it began testing the stamping line.
