Long-awaited Chevy Volt goes on sale in US soon

General Motors expects its new plug-in Chevrolet Volt/Opel Ampera hybrid to become a worldwide phenomenon.

It is set to launch the Volt electric hybrid in the US in November and GM’s new chief of international operations, Tim Lee, said battery powered and other electric hybrid models would find new markets outside the US and Japan.

Speaking in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Lee said GM was investing heavily in electric hybrids and added that there would be other significanct products to come.

Lee, in Brazil on his first international trip since being named to head GM's operations in Asia, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East at the end of last year, said GM had no plans to market the Volt in Brazil but was considering selling the Chevrolet Camaro there.

Brazil is the second largest market for GM's Chevrolet brand, and GM's third largest after China and the US.

General Motors do Brasil chief executive Jaime Ardila said he expected sales to increase 4% this month to around 210,000 units. The Brazilian car market was forecast to reach a record 3.3m units in 2010, up from 3.1m last year.
