A possible joint venture is on the cards between General Motors and Avtovaz, say local press (29/8/00).

According to the reports, the Chairman of the AvtoVAZ Board of Directors Vladimir Kadannikov says the key task of the alliance is to produce a new VAZ-2123 model of the "Niva" car.

Large-scale production with General Motors would take 1-5 years, said Kadinnikov, as opposed to 4-5 years if AvtoVAZ went into large-scale car production on its own.

The joint venture is expected to produce 75,000 of the new model of "Niva" alongside 15,000 Opel Astra cars, says the report.
