www.just-auto.com -- The row about the Firestone tyres, which may be implicated in 750 accidents in the US, is increasing momentum.

The full Economist report at www.just-auto.com/features_detail.asp?art=273 , says that Ford is still using the supplier despite the fiasco that may mean one in every 4,000 Firestone tyres could split, causing a vehicle to turn over.

This could spell more trouble for Ford as well as Firestone who are currently trying get hold of replacement tyres from their rivals, Goodyear and Michelin, in order to keep up with demands from angry customers.

Dave Leggett, Managing Editor for just-auto.com says, "The situation would appear to be getting uglier and Ford has responded by bringing forward its deadline for replacing all potentionally dangerous Firestone tyres to Spring 2001. Whether this damage limitation will be enough to allay the fears of increasingly worried customers is questionable."
