Car giant Ford is in talks with the Changan Automobile Group to build a passenger car in China, say U.S. media reports (3/8/00).

Quoting auto analysts, the reports suggest Dearborn, Michigan-based Ford is to build a vehicle based on its compact four-door Ikon model created for the Indian market.

The proposed vehicle would be larger than Changan`s Alto model say the reports, but would be within the reach of China`s new private buyers.

The world`s number two car manufacturer already has six joint venture companies that make car components within the region, alongside a 30 per cent stake in commercial-vehicle producer Jiangling Motor Corp.

Ford has imported commercial vehicles to China since 1979, with the company having now established 3 nationwide parts distributors, 11 dealers and 44 authorized service facilities within the area.
