Jim Farley, Ford Motor‘s head of world markets, has told attendees at an industry conference in Detroit that the company will bring a fully electric version of the world’s best selling vehicle to market.

“We’re going to be electrifying the F-Series — battery electric and hybrid,” Farley is quoted as saying during this week’s Deutsche Bank Global Automotive Conference in Detroit.

Until now, it had been thought that Ford’s plans for electrifying the F-150 pick-up were limited to the addition of the hybrid. The gasoline-electric variant is due to be added to the line-up towards the end of this year.

No date for the battery-powered truck was given by Farley. With the existing model due to be replaced in 2022 or 2023, Ford may instead wait for the arrival of the next generation F-150 before launching an EV.

A hybrid version of the F-150 pick-up will be available by 2020 and sold in North America and the Middle East, Ford Motor Company told the media in January 2017. The firm further stated at that time that the F-150 Hybrid would be built at Dearborn Truck in Michigan, and that the vehicle would “offer powerful towing and payload capacity and operate as a mobile generator”.
