Full year 2020 total vehicle sales in Ford Europe's key 'Europe 20' markets fell 26.8% year on year to 974,982 units with market share off only 0.3% to 7.1% compared with 2019.

The blue oval claimed to be the top commercial vehicle brand for a sixth consecutive year - across the EU20 markets - and for 56 years in the UK (just before the 1965 launch of the first Transit van, the first model to be built and sold by both Ford of England and Ford Germany.

Ford said it achieved a record EU20 full year CV market share of 14.6%, up 0.7%, in 2020 and claimed CV leadership in 10 European markets (including Turkey where the Transit line is made by Ford Otosan) while also increasing share "in most markets".

"New products launched in 2020 and home delivery trend [fostered] our success in CV segment and led to new records," Ford said in a statement. "Transit Trial and Active will gain new customers in 2021."

The popular Ranger pickup truck led its segment with a 34.9% share.

Here in Britain, the Fiesta and the Transit Custom/Tourneo Custom range took top and second spots respectively in their new vehicle sales charts in 2020.

In Germany, 14% of all Ford passenger cars sold were electrified, up from 0.6% in 2019.

EU20 SUV share climbed to 38.1% of all passenger cars for the full year, up 8.1%. Sales of the Puma, reintroduced as a B-segment crossover for the 2020 model year (reviving the nameplate of a mid 90s Fiesta-based two-door coupe), accounted for 55.7% of all Ford's SUV sales in fourth quarter, with 39,842 sold. Puma was also second top-selling Ford behind the Focus in the quarter. Ford said 45% of sales were the high specification Titanium X and ST-line X models.

Ford of Europe marketing, sales & service chief Roelant de Waard said: "2020 was an unprecedented year and the pandemic is still affecting our business. Our commercial vehicle strategy continues to flourish, with last year marking the sixth consecutive year of European market leadership. Puma and Kuga are leading the charge on our SUV growth, and now our electrification plan is accelerating with the launch of the award-winning Mustang Mach-E that combines emotion with advanced all-electric technology."
