Several recently launched new models have received five star ratings in the latest round of Euro NCAP safety tests of 11 vehicles.

In the small families category, PSA's Peugeot 308 and Mazda's acclaimed redesigned 3 achieved the five star overall rating while the Ford Ecosport B segment MPV and BMW i3 EV reached four stars.

The small Mercedes Citan Kombi (made by Renault) was reassessed and received four stars instead of the three awarded earlier in 2013.

The Ford Tourneo Connect and the PHEV hybrid version of the Mitsubishi Outlander both received five stars. The new Nissan Note supermini and the business and family van Volkswagen T5 received four stars.

The executive class Maserati Ghibli and Infiniti Q50 both received a five star overall rating.

"The Ghibli gained the EuroNCAP 5 star rating thanks to its numerous on-board safety systems, and scored 95% for adult protection, 79% for child protection, 74% for pedestrian protection and 81% for safety and driver assistance systems," Australian distributor Ateco told just-auto.

"Right from the start of the development process, technical and design solutions were chosen to satisfy the toughest international standards and achieve the highest possible level of safety, precisely with a view to winning Euro NCAP's most prestigious rating.

"More than 200 crash tests were performed on components and sub-systems, along with over 100 HYGE sled test simulations and more than 100 crash tests covering all possible types of collision: front, side, rear, rollover, and pedestrian impact.

"The five star rating is an even greater achievement considering that from 2013 Euro NCAP lifted the bar on its tests by introducing new test methods for evaluating child and pedestrian protection this year."
