Delphi Automotive Systems is the first manufacturer to meet the standards and requirements to receive type certification as required by XM Satellite Radio to build vehicle original equipment receivers for the company.

Delphi Delco Electronics Systems has received approval to proceed with commercial production of receivers capable of receiving the new satellite radio service.

Delphi will begin building the receivers in the fourth quarter of this year for 2002 model vehicles.

Announced in 1999, satellite radio is a new category of radio that uses direct satellite-to-receiver digital broadcasting technology.

The subscription-based service will provide listeners from coast-to-coast with up to 100 channels of digital-quality music, news, sports, talk, comedy, entertainment and children's programming.

XM's national rollout is scheduled to begin on September 12 in Dallas/Fort Worth and San Diego, expand in mid-October to the southwest, and in early November to the rest of the continental United States.
