Delphi Corporation is supplying what is claimed to be the motor industry's first original equipment colour-configurable instrument cluster for the 2005 Ford Mustang, which debuted at the Detroit motor show this month.

This unique feature allows the driver to modify the instrument cluster to provide a personalised colour combination.

Delphi's colour-customising instrument gauges can be subtly or dramatically illuminated using three light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The colours combine to provide six preset shades - green, blue, purple, white, orange and red, and can be selected from a menu within the vehicle's message centre. Innovative 'light pipe' technology allows the driver to mix and blend the intensity of five levels of red, green and blue to create 125 different custom-coloured backgrounds.

The six-gauge cluster, with selectable-colour backlighting, will be available as an option on the base and GT model of the 2005 Mustangs which go on sale in the US this autumn.

Delphi is also providing four other products for the new Mustang including the intrusion and inclination sensor module, smart electrical distribution centre, 6 CD in-dash radio and the passive occupant detection system.
