Hyundai Mobis, a South Korea-based car parts manufacturing company and subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Group, plans to invest $60m (Won76.8m) to build a new 33,000m² facility to supply battery systems for flagship electric vehicle models in Bekasi, a city on the eastern border of Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta.
The new plant will use battery cells supplied by HLI Green Power, and will turn them into modules that include a controller and a heat controller. It will then supply the modules to global automakers.
Hyundai Mobis was founded in 1977 and has operations in 20 countries around the world, including in the China, Germany, India, Mexico, New Zealand, Sweden and the US.
The announcement is yet another boost for the city of Bekasi, which in 2021 saw South Korea-based LG announce the opening of a new $1.2bn battery factory, in collaboration with the state-owned Indonesia Battery Corporation. Bekasi has a population of around 2.5 million people and has in recent years become a hub for foreign direct investment activity in Indonesia.
