Germany's car market is a big positive in Europe this year; it was up 22% in May, though that followed two weaker months

Data released by ACEA shows that in May new passenger car sales increased by 7.1% in the EU, bringing total registrations from January to May to a level 0.8% below the same period in 2010.

The data is consistent with JD Power's data for Western Europe released earlier this month and published on just-auto.

ACEA said that total car sales in the EU in the first five months stood at 5,885,631 units.

In May, a total of 1,208,583 new cars was registered. Sales were up in Germany (+22.0%), France (+6.1%) and Italy (+3.6%), while the market contracted by 23.3% in Spain and 1.7% in the UK. Overall, most countries saw their demand for cars increase, leading to a 7.1% growth across the EU.

UK-based research company JATO has also published figures for the European car market.

JATO's data showed  that the Volkswagen Golf remains Europe's best selling car, with sales increased by 8.6% in May compared to 2010, although cumulative sales have fallen by 7.4%.

The Ford Fiesta, with sales up by 2.7%, reclaimed 2nd place in the top 10 models from Volkswagen's Polo.

JATO also said that Volkswagen's recently revised Passat continues to record greatly increased volume, with a growth of 49.2% in May and 30.6% for the year to date, while Ford's new third generation Focus is performing strongly with sales 18.6% higher than its predecessor recorded in May 2010.

Opel/Vauxhall posted sales in May 17.4% higher than a year earlier, with both Corsa and Astra claiming top 5 positions.

Gareth Hession, Vice President, Research at JATO said: "Despite an uncertain economic outlook, strong products from Volkswagen, Ford and Opel/Vauxhall are delivering excellent sales results."
