Don Butler, the head of global strategy for Cadillac has resigned just four months after being appointed to help to boost the brand’s international sales.

A spokesman for GM’s luxury division said Butler had stepped down for personal reasons after "three years of pouring everything into Cadillac" and "to spend more time with his family and consider new avenues".

The spokesman added the decision came as a surprise and Butler had been asked to stay on at GM. The company is now looking for a replacement.

Butler was appointed to the newly created role of vice president for global Cadillac strategic development in April, reporting to the brand’s global chief Bob Ferguson.
