BMW India will launch the 1 Series, assembled in Chennai from CKD packs, on 3 September with petrol and diesel engine options.

The 1997cc diesel's 143bhp gives it an edge over Mercedes' A180 CDI, according to Autocar India while the 136bhp 1.6-litre turbocharged direct injection petrol engine is shared with the Mini Cooper and Cooper S.

Both will come only with eight-speed automatic gearboxes. Suspension has been altered to cope with Indian roads.
