BMW said Wednesday (12/07/00) that in the first six months of this year it sold 129,400 units in Germany, 1,500 units more than 127,900
the company sold in the same period in 1999.

"The German BMW market will contribute greatly to BMW's goal of reaching unit sales of 800,000 worldwide," the German carmaker said.

BMW said has defied the downward trend in Germany, where total car sales have fallen by 10% in the first half of the year.

BMW said it's strong performance is largely due to demand for the company's diesel models, which lifted unit sales by 68% compared with the same period in 1999.
