ITAR-TASS reports that AvtoVAZ in Russia has shipped the first consignments of components for cars to Uruguay.

The plant's press service told Itar-Tass that the components will be used to assemble VAZ-21214 Niva cars at the Oferol plant in Uruguay's capital of Montevideo.

The first shipment consists of components for 96 cars. Oferol is expected to start assembling the cars in July 2003 and assemble 192 all-terrain vehicles in the third quarter of the year.

AvtoVAZ intends to ship components for 1,920 cars to Uruguay in 2003.

VAZ-21214 cars to be assembled by Oferol will be sold not only in Uruguay but also in Chile, Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. The plant also plans to assemble VAZ four-wheel-drives equipped with French Peugeot engines.

In the summer of 2002, AvtoVAZ, Rusia Automotriz S.A., and Oferol signed an agreement on cooperation under which the Niva production line would be launched in Montevideo.

Cars are assembled from VAZ kits in Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Ecuador and Egypt.
