South Korean automakers' sales to the United States, their biggest export market, fell last month.

Hyundai Motor and the four other domestic companies sold 33,704 vehicles in the US in August, the lowest monthly total since July 2003, the Korea Automobile Manufacturers' Association told the Yonhap news agency.

Hyundai last month sold 24,765 vehicles in the US, off 25.4% year on year, and the third consecutive monthly decline.

"Despite oil prices' retreat from record highs, sales in the US market have no signs of recovery," an automaker official told Yonhap.

Hyundai US sales in the first three quarters of 2008 fell 6% to 337,664 units though the automaker is maintaining its sales target of 515,000 units for the year.

Affiliate Kia Motors' US sales last month plunged 27.8% to 17,383 units.
