Notably, the number of robotics-related patent applications in the automotive industry was 844 in Q1 2023, versus 1,121 in the prior quarter.
The top five companies accounted for 11% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that LG filed the most robotics patents within the automotive industry in Q1 2023. The company filed 30 robotics-related patents in the quarter, compared with 13 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Aptiv with 25 robotics patent filings, Intel (14 filings), and Hyundai Motor (14 filings) in Q1 2023.
Patenting activity was driven by China with a 12% share of total patent filings
The largest share of robotics related patent filings in the automotive industry in Q1 2023 was in China with 12%, followed by Japan (12%) and the US (11%). The share represented by China was 7% lower than the 19% share it accounted for in Q4 2022.
