Notably, the number of metaverse-related patent applications in the automotive industry was 256 in Q2 2023, versus 373 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 26% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Snap filed the most metaverse patents within the automotive industry in Q2 2023. The company filed 24 metaverse-related patents in the quarter, compared with 23 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Sony Group with 12 metaverse patent filings, Multinarity (11 filings), and Williams Sonoma (11 filings) in Q2 2023.

Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 73% share of total patent filings

The largest share of metaverse related patent filings in the automotive industry in Q2 2023 was in the US with 73%, followed by China (9%) and Japan (5%). The share represented by the US was 9% higher than the 64% share it accounted for in Q1 2023.
