Notably, the number of autonomous vehicles-related patent applications in the automotive industry was 507 in Q2 2023, versus 696 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 27% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that General Motors filed the most autonomous vehicles patents within the automotive industry in Q2 2023. The company filed 36 autonomous vehicles-related patents in the quarter, compared with 34 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Huawei Investment with 29 autonomous vehicles patent filings, Alphabet (25 filings), and Ford Motor (24 filings) in Q2 2023.

Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 67% share of total patent filings

The largest share of autonomous vehicles related patent filings in the automotive industry in Q2 2023 was in the US with 67%, followed by China (8%) and Japan (3%). The share represented by the US was 13% higher than the 54% share it accounted for in Q1 2023.
