The press preview day was 17 April

The media preview of the 2019 New York International Auto Show took place on 17 April: just-auto lists all the world debuts below.

More information about the following models can be found in PLDB, just-auto's global vehicle database. Simply click on the link at the end of this story.

Cadillac

The third generation CTS sedan, introduced at the 2013 NYIAS, is replaced by the CT5. This car, new for the 2020 model year, should also be the successor for the smaller ATS and China's extended wheelbase ATS-L. In North America, there will be turbocharged 2.0-litre and 3.0-litre engines, each linked to a ten-speed automatic transmission. There are reports claiming that the ATS Coupe will have a successor based on the CT5. This big sedan will be manufactured at two plants: Lansing Grand River in Michigan and in Shanghai as part of the SAIC GM joint venture.

Genesis

The Mint is a world premiere for the Hyundai division. This electric concept is a small sports car which features a front bench seat and two scissor-hinge doors for access to the boot. Genesis' press release speaks about "reductive, decluttered interior design".

GMC

The facelifted 2020 Acadia and 2020 Acadia Denali were announced back in February. Now they have their public premieres.

Hyundai

Hyundai Motor America will add a 4m long crossover-SUV to its range from later in the year. The production name for what is said to be have called the QX project had been expected to be Styx in some countries and Leonis in others. Instead, it is Venue, at least in the USA. The model will also use that name in India. The Venue will be positioned below the Creta as a rival for the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza.

Jaguar

The XE facelift was announced in February. As Jaguar wasn't at the Geneva show and the XEL has only been available in China since December 2017, New York is the new look car's motor show premiere. One specific change for the USA is the lack of a diesel engine for what is the 2020 model year XE.

Kia

Kia Motors has had the Sorento and Mohave in its range for many years so creating a concept with what looks like a misspelling isn't news. The 4,430mm long HabaNiro is an electric crossover about the same size as the Niro. A bright red slash across the rear pillars is meant to link the name to a ripe chilli pepper. Kia hints that there might be a production car based on this model: "Some will assume the HabaNiro concept will never be built, but we don't advise betting the farm on it". As the Niro has been around since 2016, this concept is likely to show how the second generation - due in 2022 - will look.

Another world debut is the Special Edition Stinger GTS. There is only a limited production run for this car, which, unlike other Stingers, has a modified four-wheel drive system which includes Drift Mode. And there is yet another sign for those who believe that HMG is little by little readying some countries for an eventual Kia equivalent of Hyundai's Genesis division: the Kia badge is replaced by one which says STINGER. In South Korea, neither the Stinger nor another big RWD model, the K9, has Kia logos, although there, the badge in question is a stylised E. Rumours persist that Stinger will one day become a sub-brand and then an upscale brand.

Lincoln Corsair

The MKC successor is closely linked to the new Ford Escape and uses C2, the architecture introduced by the fourth generation Focus. Corsair production will take place at Louisville Assembly in Kentucky and in China too. A Corsair Grand Touring (PHEV) will also be available but so far there has been no official mention of it. As with the MKC, 2.0- and 2.3-litre four-cylinder engines will feature but the eight-speed automatic gearbox is new.

Mazda

Not a world debut but nonetheless an important announcement from Mazda North America Operations: for the first time, the division will offer a federalised diesel engine. This had been scheduled to happen two years ago but there were many delays. Now, a specially modified version of the company's 2.2-litre four-cylinder engine will be added to the US market's CX-5 range for the 2020 model year.

Mercedes-AMG

The sports-luxury sub-brand brought facelifts of four versions of the GLC and GLC Coupé to the show as world debuts: GLC 63 4MATIC+, GLC 63 S 4MATIC+, GLC 63 S 4MATIC+ Coupé and GLC 63 S 4MATIC+ Coupé. Neither power nor torque has changed. Full details are listed here.

The CLA 35 4MATIC is a further world debut, powered by the same 2.0-litre turbo as features in the A 35 4MATIC. A four-door version of that car, the A 35 4MATIC Sedan, is another world premiere. There are now three cars in the Mercedes-AMG A-Class range: A 35 4MATIC, A 35 4MATIC Sedan, and A 35 L 4MATIC, the last of these being a world debut at Auto Shanghai, one day ahead of the standard-wheelbase sedan's premiere in Manhattan).

Mercedes-Benz

It's facelift time for the GLC Coupé exactly three years since the public first saw it at the same city's annual motor show. Updated for the 2020 model year in the US and for Euro 6d standard regulations in the European Union, the GLC Coupe gains new engines too.

The German make is also showcasing a new generation of the GLS-Class. All the official details and images are here. There will be three engines globally, including one in-line six-cylinder diesel which powers the GLS 350 d 4MATIC and with higher outputs, the GLS 400 d 4MATIC. As for the first two petrol variants, only the GLS 580 4MATIC will be available in European countries. This is powered by a new V8, while the GLS 450 4MATIC has a six-cylinder in-line engine electrified with 48-volt technology. All GLS production is in the US. There will be a Maybach-Mercedes GLS too with the version names rumoured to be GLS 600 4MATIC and GLS 680 4MATIC. These might be revealed during Monterey Week in August.

Nissan

New for the US and Canada's 2020 model year, the Versa (it should again be the Tiida in Mexico), this small sedan has its auto show debut in New York city after a world premiere at a US music festival on 12 April.

Nissan has also announced the 2020 model year 370Z. The line-up of variants gains a 50th Anniversary Edition, chosen as a reminder of the Datsun 240Z's debut in the same city 50 years earlier. There is no mention in the media release of when a successor for this car will appear: it is more than a decade old.

Another elderly Nissan is given a half-century edition for the USA's 2020 model year even though there was no such car as a Nissan GT-R 50 years ago: Prince Motors' Skyline in GT model grade turned fifty some five years ago, as Nissan's own PR heritage information notes. The GT-R 50th Anniversary Edition is joined by the GT-R NISMO which has been further tweaked. The GT-R has been in production since November 2007. Nissan still hasn't made public any plans which it might have for a replacement.

Porsche

The 992 shape 911 might have been officially revealed five months ago but Porsche hasn't finished with the 991.2 just yet: the 911 Speedster is the final variant. Powering this car is the 4.0-litre engine from the GT3 and GT3 RS. The Speedster was announced at last year's Paris show but technically speaking this is its first motor show appearance as back then, the car was termed a 'Speedster concept study'.

Subaru

A new Outback was revealed in New York City. That follows a pattern set five years ago when the soon to be replaced Legacy appeared at the Chicago show, followed by the closely linked Outback at the NYIAS two months later: a new Legacy was revealed at this year's Chicago auto show. What will be North America's 2020 model year Outback should be in dealerships from October.

Toyota

Given how old the Yaris is, it's no surprise that Toyota Motor Sales USA is dropping the current shape hatchback for the 2020 model year and bringing in a restyled Mazda2 five-door as its replacement. The little hatchback is built in Mexico by Mazda.

The Highlander is TMS USA's big news at the show. Fresh for the 2020 model year, the fourth generation of this SUV premieres exactly six years after the current model. A 220kW (295hp) 3.5-litre V6 and eight-speed transmission are standard and the vehicle itself is 60mm longer than the outgoing model so as to allow a larger boot. As for the new Highlander Hybrid, this has a 179kW (240hp) 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and two motors. Unlike the model it replaces, the latest petrol-electric Highlander can also be ordered in two-wheel drive form. In some countries, the model name will again be Kluger.

Volkswagen

The big Atlas SUV continues to sell well in North America and (as the VW Teramont) China, as well as in the Middle East. Now comes a modified version which is called Atlas Basecamp and while it is officially a concept, appears to be production-ready.
