The choice of the Toyota Prius as European Car of the Year is something of a coup for Toyota and comes as something of a surprise, I must say. Hybrid technology seems to be the way to go on CO2 in the US, with modern and cleaner diesel engines seen as the preferred technology for Europe. But the innovative hybrid car clearly appealed to the European journalists on the jury. It trounced the opposition - 406 votes to just 267 for the second-placed Citroen C4. Just goes to show that the unexpected can happen and nothing should be taken for granted. Toyota must be very satisfied.
