Blog: Dave LeggettVW's 'Porsche for the People'

Dave Leggett | 28 April 2003

June's edition of 'Car' magazine carries a report that VW is planning a low-cost mid-engined roadster. BP is quoted: "Imagine a mid-engined lightweight two-seater roadster with Boxster performance and handling at the price of a well equipped Polo. That's the kind of package we are working on." Performance with economy and at a low price. 0-60 mph in 6 secs, 55 mpg and a top speed of 150 mph. How cheap will it really be? If they pull it off, they could find themselves with a major hit on their hands. Watch out Lotus. It could be out as soon as 2005 according to Car (with a prototype on view at the Tokyo Show this October). Definitely sounds to me like the kind of product that makes sense for the Volkswagen brand - unlike the over-blown and all-wrong Phaeton (but don't expect anyone at VW to admit to the costly Phaeton error, ever).
