Blog: Dave LeggettVolkswagen and its suicide bomb tough Polo

Dave Leggett | 27 January 2005

Well, it’s pretty sick sounding isn’t it? A spoof ad in which an Arab suicide bomber drives to a restaurant in a Volkswagen Polo car bomb and detonates it on a suicide mission. Kills himself, but Polo is intact. Then we get the tagline: ‘Polo: small but tough’. My guess is that this was intentionally leaked, whatever the purported original purpose in producing it. It generates a lot of publicity for the people behind it.

The director: "I don't want to offend people, I just want to make advertisements. I wanted to show it to the Saatchis and BBHs of this world.” I take it from that comment that the Saatchis and BBHs of this world are populated by people who are exceptionally hard-nosed, difficult to impress and don’t get offended at all easily. Makes you wonder what else is being shown to these people.
