Blog: Dave LeggettUmberto Agnelli passed away

Dave Leggett | 28 May 2004

Sad to hear that Fiat chairman Umberto Agnelli passed away last night - he was suffering with  cancer. That's brought me back down to earth. Umberto took the reins at Fiat last year after the death of his brother, Gianni. He wasn't a patriarch in the mould of his brother but he seemed to be doing a reasonable job at Fiat and Fiat Auto has been getting a pretty good press lately. What does his passing away mean for Fiat? I don't know - I guess that'll become clearer over the next few days. Personal tragedy though, of course. He was only 69 years old. And cancer got his son too - Giovannino died in 1997 at the age of just 33. Cruel.
