Blog: Dave LeggettStreetcar car club

Dave Leggett | 18 September 2007

As part of the Polo BlueMotion event I attended yesterday, the Streetcar car club was there promoting itself as the Next Big Thing. Streetcar is a big Volkswagen customer.

They say that membership is rising rapidly and that there are plenty of people out there who can save on the costs of car ownership by joining a car club. The idea is simple: no need to incur heavy ownership costs - you just pay for the marginal costs of your usage.

I think you'd have to be a pretty light car user to make it work - maybe twice a week. But if you are charged by the hour and go out for the day it might still be better to get a taxi rather than leave the car parked up and racking up the bill. There again, taxis in this country are very expensive.

'Streetcars are located so that another one should be only 5-10 minutes walk away.' That's some claim. If I lived in one of the areas covered I'd be tempted to try it out. Must be quite a job finding the parking bays.
