Blog: Dave LeggettSteven Rattner

Let's hope the Obama adminsitration's appointment of Steven Rattner to a key position in the task force overseeing the restructuring of GM and Chrysler turns out to be a good one. I can see where the industry opposition is coming from. What does this guy know about the auto industry and what's his track record? is a very understandable response.

And we all have come across brilliant people who do have great track records, who are not 'autos blinded' but have a deep understanding of the sector and who we would like to think will have an input into things. Let's hope they still will.

As for Rattner, it's an intriguing one. I do think it is a strange appointment, but sometimes appointments like that can surprise.

However, I'd like to see at least one real industry heavyweight on that panel.  Even if the cynics say, with some justification, 'look where the car guys got us', I'd say you still need someone with depth of experience who really understands the industry on that panel to get the whole picture.
