For much of the 1990s Detroit appeared to almost accept decline in passenger cars because it enjoyed big margins and profits in trucks and the competition there was a lot less intense. But now, there's nowhere to hide. The Japanese are gradually coming out with the products to hit the Big Three in their SUV and pickup heartlands. This week's Detroit Show is seeing something of a product blitz from Detroit in response. About time. But it's a great pity more attention wasn't being paid to cars a few years ago. And now with the new truck products coming out from Toyota, Nissan and Honda, competition in trucks looks set to intensify further.
