The Vietnamese government is playing a dangerous game and I think they're overplaying their hand. They're raising tariffs on imported components way too early. The market is not developed enough and carmakers are not entrenched enough for the crude we-want-more-of-the-action strategy to work. The carmakers already there with SKD operations have said that the policy will act as a deterrence to further investment and if I was a government adviser in Hanoi, I'd take that seriously. There are plenty of other places in Asia to direct investment.
