I've been invited to a tour at the end of this month of Jaguar's Halewood (near Liverpool) plant where the X-type is made. Unfortunately, my diary is now heavily congested so I can't make it. But Mark Bursa is going, so he'll see if anything interesting comes out of it. It's a model plant within Ford that keeps getting the highest score in Ford's lean process audit. And it will be making the next generation Land Rover Freelander from 2006. It's quite a transformation from the days when it was a Ford plant, but there was quite a bit of controversy about the strategy back in the late 90s. And industrial relations were anything but smooth back then. The below link is to a source that is far from objective and would have put its very particular spin on things, but it gives a flavour of how things were. Unofficial walkouts were not exactly rare.
