Interesting e-mail this morning from Bob Fankhauser over at Freightliner Body Engineering in Portland (Oregon State, USA, that is - not the grim little peninsula housing a prison off the south coast of England). Bob was writing in response to my Editor's Weekly Highlights newsletter (sent out yesterday) in which I made some comments about the daily rental business in Europe - see blog entry below. Bob sent me an interesting link to a firm in Portland which is apparently involved in 'hourly hire' in what looks like an innovative approach to personal mobility. But, as Bob quite rightly points out, we're really talking pickups, minivans and Toyota Prius here rather than the kinds of vehicles I am prone to fantasising about...

I wonder though, if the flexcar approach to the problems of personal mobility could work in parts of Europe?

Recommended action: click the below link to Flexcar in Portland, see left-hand rail and under the 'personal use' header, click 'how it works'.
